The Current Situation
Port St. Lucie currently provides once-weekly garbage collection through FCC Environmental Services. While this saves money, many residents find that a single weekly pickup isn't enough—especially for larger families, during holidays, or in Florida's hot climate where garbage can quickly become a health hazard.

The Problems with Once-Weekly Service
- Odor and pests - In Florida's heat, garbage sitting for a week attracts flies, rodents, and creates unpleasant odors
- Overflowing bins - Large families often exceed cart capacity before pickup day
- Limited bulk waste - Current once-monthly bulk pickup isn't enough for home projects and cleanouts
- Health concerns - Decomposing waste in summer heat creates sanitation issues
Steven's Plan
- Restore Twice-Weekly Pickup - Work to bring back twice-weekly garbage collection without breaking the budget. This may require renegotiating the waste contract or exploring competitive bidding.
- Expand Bulk Waste Service - Increase bulk waste collection from once monthly to twice monthly, with easier online scheduling.
- Free Drop-Off Days - Expand the current free drop-off program at the Public Works Complex to include more weekend hours for working families.
- Yard Waste Solutions - Ensure reliable yard waste collection, especially during hurricane season when debris can pile up quickly.
- Cart Replacement Program - Ensure residents can easily get replacement or additional carts when needed.
How We'll Pay For It
The city currently pays approximately $467 per household annually for waste services. A return to twice-weekly pickup would cost an estimated $131 more per household. Here's how we can offset this:
- Competitive Contracting - Put the waste contract out for competitive bid to drive down costs
- Find Efficiencies - Use savings from other budget areas to subsidize improved waste service
- Phased Implementation - Start with high-density neighborhoods and areas with the greatest need
- Resident Choice - Let residents vote on service levels vs. cost through a city survey
The Bottom Line
Clean streets aren't a luxury—they're a basic expectation of city services. As Mayor, I will fight for waste collection that meets the needs of our growing community. No more overflowing bins. No more waiting weeks for bulk pickup. Just reliable, professional service that keeps Port St. Lucie clean.
